Minor Programs

USC Gould School of Law offers several minors available to all undergraduate students at USC. Students can choose to complement their major with an in-depth education of U.S. law or specialize their studies in social justice, immigration, technology and more. Each minor offers courses taught by faculty at USC Gould, a nationally top-ranked law school.

The minor in Entertainment Law introduces the legal foundations of the entertainment industry and explores intellectual property law, digital media, contracts, dealmaking and legal issues challenging this industry.

The minor in Law and Biopharmaceutical Sciences studies the intersection of pharmaceutical and regulatory science and the legal system.

The Law and Government Minor introduces the legal foundations of legal institutions and explores the intersections of law with government and politics.

Students gain a foundational understanding of the U.S. legal system, constitutional principles, and the ways laws and legal institutions shape government action. Through coursework that explores law, politics, and society, students develop the analytical skills needed to understand how legal frameworks influence decision-making at every level of government.

The minor provides valuable training in critical thinking, legal analysis, writing, and public speaking. Students explore topics ranging from constitutional law and government institutions to public policy and political processes while engaging with perspectives from across the university. Whether preparing for law school, a career in government, or leadership roles in the public and private sectors, students will gain a deeper understanding of the legal foundations that shape modern governance.

The minor in Law and Innovation introduces students to the legal foundations that shape design, technology and creative innovation. The program explores U.S. law, design strategy, data visualization, and the legal issues driving emerging technologies and industries.

The minor enables students to examine how legal systems influence innovation, design, entrepreneurship, and emerging industries while developing practical skills in strategic analysis and communication.

The curriculum combines the study of legal frameworks with coursework in design strategy, data visualization, and innovation practices. Designed for students from all academic backgrounds, the minor prepares future leaders to navigate the increasingly complex intersection of law, technology, and design. Students develop skills in legal reasoning, design thinking, data visualization, and interdisciplinary collaboration while exploring topics such as intellectual property, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and product development. Whether pursuing careers in technology, entrepreneurship, design, public service, or law, graduates of the program will be equipped to address real-world challenges in a rapidly evolving global economy.

The Law and Migration Studies Minor introduces students to the U.S. legal system as it relates to various aspects of immigration law, its impact on our communities, and consequences for our society nationally and globally.

The curriculum in law and migration studies will allow students to familiarize themselves with many dynamic and complex concepts of immigration law and migration studies. Further, it provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of law and migration with elective course choices from various departments within USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Sol Price School of Public Policy.

The Law and Public Health Minor explores how legal systems, policy, and health institutions work together to shape individual and population health outcomes.

Students gain a foundational understanding of health law, public health principles, ethics, and regulation while examining how laws influence healthcare delivery, disease prevention, health behaviors, and access to care. Through this integrated approach, students develop the knowledge needed to understand the legal and social forces that impact health in communities around the world.

The minor equips students with the analytical and communication skills necessary to address complex health challenges. Coursework explores topics such as health equity, patient rights, regulatory compliance, global health governance, and the legal dimensions of emerging public health issues. Whether pursuing careers in medicine, public health, law, government, or nonprofit leadership, students will be prepared to navigate and influence the legal frameworks that shape health and well-being.

In the Artificial Intelligence, Law and Regulation minor, students will study the effect AI and machine learning has on society and will examine how the law is responding to the regulation of artificial intelligence as it becomes more pervasive in everyday life.

The Law and Technology Minor studies the intersection of technological developments and the legal system.

Students will examine contemporary issues raised by emerging technologies, including internet privacy, patent law, intellectual property and cybercrime. The Law and Technology minor requires a minimum of 18 units.

The Law, Advocacy and Persuasive Performance minor is an interdisciplinary program that explores the dynamic intersection of dramatic arts and the law.

Combining legal studies with performance-based training, students develop essential advocacy skills including persuasive speaking, improvisation, audience analysis, storytelling, and public presence. Designed for students interested in law, public service, politics, advocacy, and related fields, the minor equips graduates with the communication tools needed to engage, persuade, and lead in a wide range of professional settings.

By pairing the study of legal systems and social issues with techniques drawn from acting, public speaking, and performance, students learn how to communicate with confidence, clarity, and emotional intelligence. Through coursework in law and theatre, students gain a deeper understanding of how arguments are constructed, how audiences are influenced, and how storytelling can drive meaningful change. The result is a distinctive educational experience that prepares students to become thoughtful, adaptable, and compelling advocates for justice, leadership, and civic engagement.

The Legal Studies Minor provides an academic foundation in law for undergraduate students.

The minor allows students to deepen their understanding of the U.S. legal system as a part of their bachelor's degree.

The curriculum includes a Fundamentals of the U.S. Legal System course in addition to an array of in-depth and real-world legal courses. Classes from the Economics, History, Philosophy and Political Science departments at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences; and Price School of Public Policy are also a part of the curriculum to amplify legal studies with historical, societal and economic understanding.

The Sports Law Minor explores the legal foundations of the sports industry.

Students gain an understanding of the laws, regulations, and business practices that shape professional, collegiate, and amateur athletics, while examining topics such as contract negotiation and drafting, athlete representation, governance, Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), and emerging legal issues in sports. Through a combination of legal studies and industry-focused coursework, students learn how law influences every aspect of the modern sports landscape.
